Thanks Sam, hopefully you're feeling better. Isn't it ironic that you set a book with characters of a different race and you get called racist? I found the novel to relate to the struggles of the Jewish people, amongst other themes. Still, I hope the controversy sold you more books!
And World of slaves was great fun - a Tripods in miniature.
Still trying to track down Crown and Anchor - my last of your novels/shorts that I have not acquired to read.

No, I haven't been looking at the board lately -- poor health (still).
I'm afraid I can't recall much of those short stories - had consigned World of Slaves to well deserved oblivion, but like the Tripods it probably derived from unconscious recollection of Wells' original. Re Palace of Strangers, Michael, I'm glad you liked it but it landed me in a little trouble with the Jewish Chronicle. They too assumed I was Jewish and, when I pointed out I wasn't, felt I was a bit antisemitic in saying so. At the time I think I was more interested in the contrasting Catholic angle, and no, I'm not a Catholic either. The local angle also had an influence: I grew up in the countryside just outside Liverpool (then -- now probably a suburb).

Sorry Robert, someone just snapped it up and I've sent him the first half...
Sam, if you're still reading, I read Resurrection (I read it under the A World of Slaves title - a better title I thought) and noticed a remarkable similarity with THe tripods. Did you have this consciously in mind and revisit it for the Tripods?

Yeah, I've wondered about the shorts as well. They're such a different format from novels that I'm very curious to see what Mr.Youd's strengths are in their regard. I might have to buy that collection off of you, Michael, if I can get my finances in order. Of course, I still also have plenty of Sam's novels to read yet(he said with a blissful smile).

I'm wading through all your published short stories. Was there any favourite shorts? Some have been very good - I enjoyed Planet of Change immensely, for exampole, though I'm still only in the first quarter!
Also, I tracked down A Palace of Strangers - wonderful book, and took me be surprise in it's direction! What inspired that one? I haven't read that you are Jewish (the cover blurb said you are "gentile") so did you have a Jewish friend you used as a basis or to research?

I'd like a honest vote, raise of hands how many of you would pick up a book on werewolves, vampires, magicians or cupid.

Thanks for asking that question Chris. I can't believe I've been on here for so long without asking Sam what he thinks is good. I'll also check them out
