Alec Srifuldt posts on 5/24/2010 10:24:09 PM I did this book review for a class. I hope it's helpful for anyone interested: How much would you give to live a life free of pain, fear, or discomfort? Would you give up your freedom? Your choices? Your ability to love? This is just one of the many themes examined in The Giver. The story follows Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy living in a safe, predictable society referred to as The Community. Everyone in the community has a job, plenty of food, and abides by the rules. Jonas lives a comfortable childhood, but when he turns twelve and is given a job, he becomes the Receiver of Memories, an assignment that will change his world forever. The Giver, the man who gives Jonas the memories, is probably my favorite character. He’s not that old, but the experiences that he carries for the community have aged him. Even though he’s got a pretty uneventful life, the memories make him feel like a very experienced man. He also helps Jonas through all the experiences he encounters in the memories, and becomes like a grandfather to him. Jonas struggles with the society in the new light with which he sees it. He feels an inner conflict because he can no longer continue his innocent childhood life in the community, and since he is different from the rest of the community, he feels threatened by a way of life that he now feels is unjust. The Giver made me think about questions and themes I hadn’t thought of before. For example, the importance of individuality is one theme that really stuck out at me. Jonas’s (and his peers’) differences are celebrated for the first time when they come of age and start different paths of adulthood. Jonas’s individuality goes further than when he starts receiving memories and realizes that the whole community is still living in consolidation. By being emotionally sterile, individuals cannot fully express their personality. One of my favorite things about the story was that the allegories weren’t inaccessible. While some stories make it hard to find the meaning in them with complex symbolism, this one made understandable connections to real-life themes. I would suggest this to preteens entering the transitional stage to adolescence. I would also recommend it to people who like to think deeply about important ideas, like the importance of love, emotion, memories, and individuality. Seeing that this is one of my all-time favorite books, I would have to give it a five out of five.
