Frank posts on 3/5/2005 5:03:43 PM For Clotilde Here are a few themes in "Alias Grace" Sex and sensuality (this is naturally linked with the theme of relationships between men and women.) The final quilt that Grace makes retells aspects of her life and experience. Grace is associated with storytelling. I think that MacKenzie (the lawyer's) image of Grace as "a Sherherezade" is a fascinating image given that Grace is such a good storyteller. (Find out about the original Shererezade) The multiple narratives that allow the reader to piece together Grace's guilt or innocence from a variety of perspectives is also thematic. There is the idea that Grace is on a journey in the novel. Much of it from her prison cell. The fact that she ends up in Ithaca, New York, seems significant. Find out about the signifcance of Ithaca and how its meaning and what its most famous King was famous for. You'll see that a comparison is being made with Grace. Trace the theme of "The Lady" in the novel, as this is what Grace finally becomes. I also think that the theme of identity is important. After all, the novel's title points towards this. Grace has a split personality. But then Atwood recognises this was a problem for her home country too. Canada had an identity crises.
