LatashaMarie posts on 7/27/2010 11:11:15 AM This book is trully a work of literature. & for your information down there... the slang was to show how it was back then. They're contry people. What did you expect? "How are you all doing today? what a fine morning Miss love?" no. The author knew the way they talked back then and it really added an additioonal flavor to the story. Let you know that this is real. Takes you back a few steps in history. I trully did enjoy this book i got the hang of the way they spoke and acted. At first i must say i was trully lost.. but i got into the jist of things. Im happy my advanced literature teacher had us to read it for a summer report.

Anonymous posts on 1/2/2009 2:02:05 PM My son and I are reading "Cold Sassy Tree" for a college literature class. It seems to be universally either loved or loathed; we fall into the "loathe" camp, mainly for how badly it's written. For instance, not only do the characters continually say "would of" or "must of" instead of "would've"(would have) or "must've" (must have), the narrator does, too. Perhaps the author thought this would immerse the reader more fully into the characters' uneducated dialect, but it is extremely distracting, and makes no sense. After all, whether people say "would've" or "would of," it sounds the same. Those who write "would of" are legion, but they only do so out of ignorance; why would the narrator do so?

'lissa posts on 6/5/2008 8:07:35 PM I had to read this book for my english class and personally it is the worst book I have ever read! out of about all 40 kids who had to read it i don't think anyone could get into it.

posts on 7/26/2006 1:14:34 AM I am so glad to know that i am not the only one who thought the beginning of the book was really horrible! It was such a slow read i fell asleep twice while i was readng it! I am just thankful that the end was way better,if it haden't been i don't know if Honors English would really be worth it!
posts on 7/5/2006 1:38:23 PM i want to know more infornmation on your book so i can write a book report on it.
camador posts on 1/10/2006 9:05:11 PM Disagree -- the book being about a "more graceful" time??? Not sure how you define "grace" but it sure wasn't graceful for African Americans or the mill workers.
susan posts on 1/9/2006 3:14:59 PM I certainly hope you kids read this book thoroughly. Then read it again when you are grown up enough to appreciate it. It is a beautifully written snapshot of a more graceful era. Even though the living was difficult, the characters managed to have colorful lives, they actually had conversations, shared goals, appreciated family. What a concept!!
