Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twersky Message Board

judy sorin posts on 1/14/2010 11:44:52 AM Dear Rabbi Twerski, I had the pleasure of meeting and dining with you in Austin Texas many years ago when you were here as a guest speaker. At the time I never imgagined I would be wrtiting to you about my current problem. My daughter who is 28 just moved back to Austin after living in New York for 3 years. She is presently living here, and what I have observed over the last 5 months and worse in December and January , is that my daughter has a substance abuse problem. She drinks alcohal, does cocaine, takes ambien, takes vicoden, aderol and marajuana. In addition she is a Type 1 Diabetic since she was 11. In December she was sleeping 20 hours and waking up saying she was tired and would go back to bed for hours on end, then be up and jumpy. Because I had my suspicions I went through her room and found alcohal and marajuana and her diary. I did a terrible thing I read it and all my suspicions were not only confirmed but worse. She has seen a Psychiatrist once so far and was given Lexapro and told she self medicates to overcome her depression, and according to my daughter the Dr. told her she is not an addict and that she should not let her parents stress her out because that is when she self medicates. She was to be off all caffine drinks, regulate her daily schedule and go to sleep no earlier than 10PM. This lasted for about 4 days and last night she appeared to me to be going back to bad habits, no dinner, seemed a little jumpy and drinking caffinated drinks. My husband refuses to see that she has a serious problem that I believe needs a serious treatment program. He refuses to push that issue and says let her Dr. deal with it. I fear for her life and actually feel so neglegant , we should have gotten her to a hospital two weeks ago when she was sleeping non-stop. What advice can you give me, when my husband is in denial about her true addiction. He refuses to use the word addict and is mad at me for being the "messenger" about her problem. I plan on going today to an alanon meeting, but again I fear she is slowing killing herself especially because of her Diabetes. I look forward to hearing back from you. Sincerely, Judy Sorin, 512-422-2721

Benjamin posts on 12/17/2009 11:47:39 PM Dear Rabbi Twersky, my daughter has a history of alcholism and controlled substance abuse for extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Her condition has become more acute to the point of needing intervention. Could you recommend a therapist in the Kansas City area or inpatient facility somewhere in the U.S.? Best Wishes. Benjamin

C.J.R. posts on 11/27/2009 3:58:14 PM Dear Rabbi Twersky, After nearly two decades of parenting a large number of children alone in Israel, as an abandoned spouse, I developed Bi-polar Depression and cannot find the right meds in the USA. I have a first cousin called Dr. Harold I. Eist, of Bethesda Maryland, also a psychiatrist, who I wrote to for help, but still have not found a a drug to assist me. In Israel where I raised my family alone, I used a drug called Ixel, produced in France, but it is not approved by the FDA in the USA, that in combination with valium and tegretol. Can you help me? I met you in Sefat, nearly 25 years ago where you spoke just before Purim to a group of women in the Old City. Your wife, OBM, was still with you at the time and you spoke about making aliyah. Warm Regards! CJR

Yehudis posts on 1/25/2009 1:31:43 PM My mother-in-law recently lost her husband of 65 years, and we were looking for a book that would offer some comfort to her. She is not frum and would not read a very "heavy" book. Can you recommend something for her to read? Thank you in advance.
