deam marshall posts on 6/30/2005 11:44:07 PM Shelby Foote was probably one of the few historians who made sense out of the senselessness of the American Civil War, for that we owe him much appreciation. I think Mr.Foote also became a catalyst in reviving America's interest in history on a massive scale. Again we owe him our deepest thanks. I believe Mr. Foote personified all the great qualities that defined Southern Culture. He tapped into that essence that made fighting for Dixie a noble cause, but displayed the wisdom of making amends and building a real Union for all Americans. One of my most enjoyable reading experiences was completing his narrative trilogy on the Civil War. May he rest in peace.
Jason Smith posts on 6/30/2005 12:17:02 AM I'm a 30 year old man living in Kentucky. I never knew who Mr. Foote was until approx. 6 months ago. His passion about the civil war drew me in overwhelmingly. I'm the type of person that probably would have never even cared about that part of history due to the racial undertones that it is taught with today in America's schools. After seeing Mr. Foote in many different shows and documentaries about the Civil War I took a fresh look at that part of our countries history. One month ago I completed a 9 day trip to most of the major battle fields in the Fredericksburg, Chancelorsville, Antietam, Wilderness, Mannassas, and Gettysburg areas. I'm currently considering a life changing decision of dedicating my life to something similar to Mr. Foote's. Rest in peace Mr. Foote. One day, hopefully I'll join you in a similar area to the dying words or Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.... "Let us cross the river and rest in the shade of the trees"

Bob posts on 6/29/2005 11:09:08 AM Mr. Foote was a truely gifted writer and historian. His wonderful work on the Ken Burn's Civil War added so much to that great Historical Series. He and his great work will be very much missed.
Mark posts on 6/29/2005 9:55:18 AM Does anyone out there have information on where someone can send flowers for his funeral/memorial or donations if so stated? Thank you, Mark
Harry Kielty posts on 6/29/2005 7:09:44 AM I recently came across this gentleman while watching the TV series on the Civil war being shown in the UK. He fired in me an enthususiasm about the South and the Civil War. He struck me as a fine man with a balanced view of this turbulent time. He was an excellent ambassador. I wished I had met him. RIP
Robert Leibold posts on 6/29/2005 6:26:56 AM I grew from youth to middle-age a devotee of Bruce Catton, William Manchester and Shelby Foote. Foote's death yesterday brings again to mind the supreme Shakespearean tragedy of the death of the gentrified south he so loved, and the mournful words of Major S.A. Jonas: "Representing nothing on God's earth now, and naught in the waters below it; as the pledge of a nation that's dead and gone...keep it, dear friends, and show it...." --(From "Lines on the Back of a Confederate Note") The world has lost a rare literary genius in Foote, though his passing scores barely a ripple in a popular culture increasingly dominated by the inane excesses' of Michael Jackson and Paris Hilton.
Brent posts on 6/28/2005 8:26:29 PM I have read and enjoyed Mr. Foote's trilogy of work, and have started other papers of his. He was a master storyteller and will truly be missed. Rest in peace.
Jason Smith posts on 6/28/2005 6:55:03 PM Just as you worked so hard to make sure we never forgot about our countries history, you too will never be forgotten. God bless!
