The Informer tells the story of an inarticulate man who cannot express his guilt. The film is a good example of Ford's use of symbolic image. Ezekiel Steiner

The Informer may seem heavy-handed and obvious but it presents us with a textbook on the method that Ford was to refine over the decades until he became the recognized master of American cinema. Perhaps this film most clearly illustrates Ford's use of symbolic imagery, the story of an inarticulate man who cannot verbally express his guilt and self-revulsion. In place of dialogue Ford must make the external world represent the hidden dimensions of the man's soul.
