Penn's characters are basically good, though inarticulate, people who can't understand the artificial world that imprisons them. Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker can know the world only through touch. As in all Penn's films, it is direct physical contact that provides the most meaningful human expression. Only when the water on her hands and its name are made clear to Helen does she understand what Annie can teach her. Ezekiel Steiner
