A screwball comedy of mistaken identity resembling Howard Hawks's films of the 1930s. Bogdanovich refuses to repeat himself, and thus makes films on a variety of subjects in a variety of styles. The difficulty is that whereas the earlier directors made films with spontaneous invention, Bogdanovich is self-conscious, and his movies are too neat and carefully manipulated. There is a calculated distance from his characters, a coolness and detachment. His films are entertaining but you have a sense that he doesn't himself believe in them. They are too well made.
