two men offer to take him to DC for some contract work playing the
violin, he accepts, but after a night of celebration upon their
arrival, he wakes up in a holding cell, where slavers inform him he is
to be sold. He is given the name Platt by his captors and taken to the
deep South, where he is held by a slave-trader who beats him into
submission. He is eventually sold to a plantation owner named Ford,
who possesses a relatively kind demeanor. However, when Northup's
intelligence lands him on the bad side of Ford's carpenter, he finds
himself harassed with his life threatened. After the carpenter tries
to lynch Northup, he is briefly sheltered by Ford, who explains to him
that he cannot control his carpenter, thus he has sold Northup to a
nearby slave owner named Edwin Epps. Epps is not nearly as benevolent
as Ford, viciously beating his slaves regularly and routinely raping a
slave girl he owns named Patsy. While working in Epps' cotton fields,
Northup dedicates every waking hour to surviving and trying to obtain
a means of sending out a letter to retrieve his freedom.
