This film is a special effects feast; technological devices, and ectoplasmic beings and stunts. The story is original and tells of how one man brings together several very different characters.
A family who have lost everything including a mother in a house fire inherit a glass mansion from a dead eccentric uncle. They then meet Dennis (Matthew Lillard) a psychic who is owed money for his work with the uncle when he helped him capture ghosts. These ghosts, which are now trapped in the house like an exhibit at the zoo. And a woman who lost her lover because of one of the ghost captures went wrong. She now wants to release the trapped spirits.
They are all trapped inside the house when a mechanism is set-off sending the whole house in chaos. Walls moving and doors opening- the whole house is a machine, which has sealed them all inside.
While the group is split up inside the moving labryinth, the ghosts are slowly being released one by one. The ghosts aren't happy and try killing them in the gorest ways possible. The main questions are, what is the purpose of the house? And why let a family enter it with deadly ghosts inside? Can they stop the machine before it reaches its final stages which could lead to the ultimate control and power.
Dennis is a great character and totally loveable. His sarcastic humour lightens the horror and he explains what's going on. We especially feel sorry for him when he discovers that the Uncle didn't treat him like a freak because he was using him for his unique powers. A great performance by Lillard. A great film that has suspense, horror and gore, humour, romance and action.
