As she celebrates her 13th birthday, Matt gives her a hand-made doll house that features small pictures of Jenna, there is also a package of magic dust. Jenna wishes she was older, 30 to be exact.   The Six Chicks clique have agreed to come to the Birthday party because Jenna will do homework for them. They wind up humiliating her which sets off a string of events....

Suddenly Jenna wakes up as the 30 years Jenna Rink. She is still mentally and emotionally a 13 year old but she is now inside of a possible future self. She is now a very successful magazine editor working for Poise Magazine. Her co-worker, a junior editor, is the grown up version of the head of the 6 Chicks.   She quickly has to pretend she is all grown up and then slowly learns she has grown up to become a very superficial, unethical person.   Through a somewhat believable coincidence she re-meets Matt (now played by Mark Ruffalo). To Jenna (Jennifer Garner) it was just yesterday that Matt was a chubby 13 year old. Now he is grown up and she finds out they have not seen each other for nearly 10 nears and they stopped being friends when they were 13.

Jenna (Garner) is a frustrated 13 year old, who in a desperate moment wishes to become thirty. The sparkly dust her best friend Matt offered her as part of her birthday present somehow performs the miracle and Jenna wakes up to find herself an established fashion editor and a sexy woman nearing her thirtieth birthday. From then on, she goes through stages of disbelief and aberration over the kind of person she has turned out to be.

Jennifer Garner plays Jenna Rink, a 13-year old who is dying to grow up. She gets her wish on her 13th birthday, after a dismal party leaves her crying alone in a closet. She awakens "thirty, flirty and fabulous" - with a career as a hot NYC magazine editor, a fabulous apartment, great clothes, and a famous athlete as a boyfriend. As the movie progesses, though, Jenna finds that being thirty is much more than being "flirty and fabulous" - it's about being comfortable with who you are - not who others want you to be.
