In 5x2, the director uses the backwards storytelling device and shows five scenes of the married life of Marion and Gilles. The film starts with the signature of divorce papers and the awkward attempt at reconciliation of Gilles. The second scene describes an evening at home as the couple receives Gilles's brother and his gay companion. One learns then that Gilles has already cheated on his wife and that the couple is not doing so well.
The third scene of 5x2 happens on the day of Marion's childbirth and relates the strange behavior of Gilles who prefers not to attend his son's birth. The fourth scene takes place the day of the marriage of the couple. Gilles, drunk and tired, falls asleep before being able to prove his love to his wife. Then Marion meets, in the garden of the hotel, an unknown who makes love to her. The last scene of the film describes the first meeting of Marion and Gilles in Italy during the summer holidays.
