While an aging thief is in the process of robbing a mansion, he hides in a secret room and witnesses the President of the U.S. killing his mistress, who happens to be his best friend's wife. Trying to scare him away, the secret service tries to kill the thief's daughter. The thief refuses to run, he decides to take the President down. The thief, putting himself at risk of being arrested for robbery, explains everything to the mistress's husband. The husband visits the President and kills him with the same letter opener that was used to killed his wife.

Luther Whitney is a master thief who one night breaks into a mansion. He finds a vault filled with all sorts of valuables. The vault is equipped with a two-way mirror with a view of the outside room. Luther is almost finished when he sees two people stumble into the room. Their sex soon becomes violent, and then the woman is dead. The man involved is the President of the United States.

In this movie, Clint Eastwood plays a cat burglar who witnesses a heinous crime while in the middle of pulling a job. The crime involves the president of the United States and his latest girlfriend. Only the girl ends up dead at the hands of the Secret Service and they try hard to cover it up. Gene Hackman plays the president. Ed Harris is the cop assigned to try to find the criminal.
