This is the story of a reporter who is in possession of a model ship that sunk many years ago and is believed to have treasure in it, making TinTin a wanted man. Tintin is a young reporter living in Belgium together with his dog Snowy who happens to be in possession of a miniature ship model that sunk many years ago. He bought the ship from the market and is not aware of its significance until two men Sakharine and Barnaby try to persuade him to sell them the ship. Tintin refuses the deal and on reaching home, the ship breaks and a section of it rolls under the cabinet. His house is later on broken into and the ship is stolen; the first suspect is Sakharine but when Tintin visits his house, he realizes another model of the same ship only that this one is not broken.

Snowy comes across the broken piece and from it Tintin realizes that there are three such models and each contains a piece of instruction which when put together will lead to the location where the real Unicorn sunk with treasure inside. The third scroll is in Bagghar under the custody of Omar ben Salaad, but Sakharine manages to get it before Tintin. Tintin is taken as a prisoner in the ship they are travelling in and he collaborates with Captain Haddock who is ever drunk and unaware of his sorroundings. They set up Sakharine who is arrested by detectives, Thomson and Thompson while Tintin, Snowy and Captain Haddock proceed with the search for the Unicorn.
