In the 1980s, Ron Burgundy and Veronica Corningstone are a popular husband-wife news anchor team in New York City. When the head anchor for the network decides to step down, Ron assumes that he and Veronica will be promoted together; however, when only Veronica is promoted, Ron storms out, leaves her, and spirals into self-loathing. When a new 24-hour news network knocks on his door, offering him an anchor position, he re-assembles his old news team-- Brian Fantana, Champ Kind, and Brick Tamland-- to pick up the pieces and get back to the world of the news. Upon arriving, they discover they have been given the worst imaginable time slot. The coveted evening news anchor position has been given to Jack Lime, a handsome and arrogant young man who pushes Ron's buttons at every turn. In his desperation to land ratings, Ron invents several techniques that we now see every day on 24-hour news networks, and while Jack Lime, Veronica Corningstone, and many others are furious that this shoddy journalism is being passed off as the news, Ron and the gang find their popularity soaring. The lower their journalism sinks, the more success they find... but with greater success comes greater ego, and when Ron alienates those around him, he must find a way to win back their friendship.
