Gena Rowlands is a 50 years old philosophy professor living with Ian Holm, a cardiologist. As she has decided to write a book, she has rented a flat downtown where she can write during the day. She discovers that she can hear what's going on in the next apartment which is a psychiatrist's office. So she becomes aware of the anxieties of Mia Farrow, a pregnant woman who's consulting the doctor. Gena will take this opportunity to analyze her own situation and the way her life has affected the ones she has lived with.

One of Woody Allen's best movies. Admirable performance of Gena Rowlands and cinematography of the Bergmanian Sven Nykvist.
