Michael Boll (Spader) is a wimpy but affluent young executive who is about to have his face rearranged in a bar by a jealous boyfriend when a handsome, mysterious stranger named Alex (Lowe) steps in and then disappears. Later that evening while jogging Michael sees Alex again on a pier and the two go out to an underground club. Within a few days Alex introduces Michael to his world- a world full of booze, drugs, women, excitement and thrills.

Michael, who is not happy with his life circumstances and is engaged to a woman he doesn't want to marry, is immediately drawn in. Alex,in turn makes himself comfortable in Michael's home and life. One night things go too far when Michael discovers that Alex has beaten a co-worker of his almost to death over an upcoming promotion. He tells him to get out of his condo and out of his life. Alex retaliates by turning Michael's simple, boring life upside down. When a woman friend of his is found murdered in his home, Michael realizes finally that Alex is a dangerous sociopath. Unable to go to the police because Alex has planted incriminating evidence on him, Michael turns to his older brother for help in stopping Alex in his tracks.
