BLACK ORPHEUS ( Orfeu Negro ) is a movie cowritten and directed by Marcel Camus in 1959. The picture earned the Golden Paln at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category.

The movie retells the myth of Orpheus and Euridyce in the middle of the carnaval of Rio de Janeiro. A cab driver, Orpheus, and a farmer girl (Euridice) fall deeply in love. Engaged to Mira, Orpheus is helped by his friends while Euridice is pursued by a strange character wearing a mask of death.
