Jamie Foxx stars as Quincy Watson, a magazine editor struggling with his job and his relationship with his girlfriend Helen (Bianca Lawson). While at work, Watson gets called into the office of his boss Philip Gascon (Peter MacNicol). Watson thinks he's getting fired but his boss wants him to do the research and fire the people. That night Watson planned to announce his engagement to Helen but she breaks up with him. This sends him over the edge, and he winds up writing a book on how to break up with someone. It becomes a big success and Watson's boss asks him for help to break up with his girlfriend Rita Monroe (Jennifer Espisito). At the same time, Watson's cousin Evan Fields (Morris Chestnut) wants to break up with Nicky Callas (Gabrielle Union), the woman he's been seeing for the last three months. Through a series of miscommunications, untimely phone calls, impersonations, bad advice, and one character having knowledge the other didn't, all parties involved get intertangled with each other. Watson starts dating Callas with his couson's knowledge. Rita sleeps with Fields but thinks he's Watson. Gascon thinks Watson had slept with Monroe when it was really Fields, and on and on and on. Through all this Watson falls in love with Callas and tries to prove his feeling are true while the rest of the character figure out what's really going on and what's really true. Ultimately, Watson does the right thing and shows his true feeling for Callas.
