Don Johnston (Bill Murray) is an aging bachelor who's girlfriend has left him once again. He finds himself very lonely and without purpose until a mysterious pink letter arrives in the mail. The anonymous letter states that he has a son who is in his late teens. The child is the product of one of several relationship Don had in his youth but he is not sure which.

With the encouragement of his neighbor, Winston, Don plans to visit the 5 potential candidates to see if he can figure out which one is sender of the letter. Winston is a detective wannabe and creates a whole itinerary complete with rental car, airfare and hotels. He has also gathered the names and addresses of the women.

As Don visits each woman he finds misadventure, sex, strangeness, mortality and danger. It appears that he also takes a journey through his past.
