Jack Lemmon plays Victor, a man grieving the loss of his wife. He decides he wants to kill himself so he checks himself into a hotel. In the room next to him is a hit man, Trabucco (Matthau). Victor annoys Trabucco through a series of comic mishaps, but eventually they grow to be buddy buddy.
