The 20's. John Cusack is a talented young author of plays. Idealistic, he doesn't want to make any compromises but, when he is announced that a mobster is ready to produce his last play at the sole condition that his girlfriend plays a part, he accepts. The cast includes Dianne Wiest, a Broadway star who didn't have a hit for years and also Rob Reiner, a great actor and a compulsive eater. Cusack, during the rehearsals, realizes that the alchemy doesn't work. Chazz Palminteri, the body guard of the producer's girlfriend, begins to help him find solutions and soon almost rewrites the entire play.

Very smart and funny.
