A woman lives on Greek island where she gets engaged during World War II. Her fiance leaves for war while the Italians move into the island. One of the Italians begins to fall in love with the Greek woman. They soon both fall for each other, but become torn apart as the Nazis make their way to Greece.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin is essentially a love story taking place on a Greek Island during WWII. Heroine falls in love with an enemy soldier and calls off her engagement to a local boy. At wars end the soldier fails to return to her, however several years later he finds he cannot live without her and does return to claim her love
