A businessman and head of a family of four (Martin Short) inherits a sailboat frm an uncle who died in the carrribean. Longing to be the hero he persuades his family to fly to the caribbean and sail the ship back to an american port where he believes they can sell it for a profit. He hires a captain sight unseen and they arrive to find the ship barely seaworthy, and the captain (Kurt Russel) even less so. Short's trust in "Captain Ron" begins to waver and blossoms into hostility as he realizes that this unlikely captain, and not he, has become the family's hero.
Short blusters and complains about the captain as they journey through the islands, mocking the captain's tales of "gorillas" and "pirates" of the carribean, while he tries to win back the favor of his family.
