After his parents divorce, Frank Abignale runs away and becomes a con artist. He poses as a copilot for Pan-Am Airlines and begins forging paychecks.

An FBI agent, Carl Handraddy, catches on to the con and begins tracking and chasing Frank.   When Carl gets too close Frank ditches the airline and begins posing as a doctor. He meets a nurse and they get engaged.

Once again, when Carl gets too close, Frank ditches the doctor's coat and becomes a lawyer and goes to work for his fiance's father. Carl once again catches up to Frank.

Frank is forced to flee, leaving his love behind. He flees to France. Carl finally catches Frank in France and extradites him back to America.

After a short period in prison, Frank is freed under one condition. He must for the FBI in the fraud department with Carl. Frank eventually goes on to create some of the most effective forms of fraud detection and monitoring.
