Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Charulata - The Lonely Wife

The film is set in British India in the 1870's when nationalism was on the upswing in the province of Bengal. Bhupati(Sailen Mukherjee) the publisher and editor of a political publication, hardly finds time for his beautiful, cultivated and much younger wife Charu (Madhabi). He realizes her literary interests though, and instead asks his younger cousin Amal (Soumitra) - a budding literateur himself - to keep her company. Charu and Amal are in the same age group - and nurture similar ambitions - and although thier interaction starts at an intellectual level, Charu's loneliness gradually drives her to an intimate relationship with Amal.
