Actors: Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, Benny Hill

Detailed Plot Synopsis of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts creates all sorts of wacky things but can't make ends meet. He bumps into Truly Scrumptious, the wealthy heir of the local candy magnate, and his two kids scheme to get the grownups together. But his refurbished car, the namesake of the title, can float on water and fly (or can it?), and the greedy Baron Bomburst of Vulgaria kidnaps Potts's even more eccentric Grandpa in an effort to get the secret of the car, so it's off to Vulgaria for a rescue. The ubiquitous Benny Hill appears as a toymaker, Jeffries is delightful as Grandpa Potts, Anna Quayle is a sensuous Baroness Bomburst in the Betty Boop mode, and there are lovely shots of Mad King Ludwig's fairy tale castle, Neuschwanstein. Roald Dahl was one of the coauthors of the script (based on an Ian Fleming novel), and the brothers Sherman, responsible for the songs of "Mary Poppins," "The Happiest Millionaire," "Charlotte's Web," and many Disney movies (including the Disney Poohs), penned a lovely score that includes "The Roses of Success," "Posh," "Toot Sweets," "Truly Scrumptius," and the gorgeous lullabye "Hushabye Mountain."
