Mongryong, the son of the Governor, falls in love with Chunhyang, the daughter of a courtesan. Both get secretly married because of the difference of their background. A few weeks later, Mongryong must follow his father in Seoul in order to finish his studies.
The new Governor wants Chunhyang to become his mistress but the young girl prefers to be severely whipped at several occasions rather than to betray her husband. Three years later, Mongryong comes back home as an observer for the King and finds Chunhyang, his faithful wife, in prison.
