This movie is based on a book by Dominique LaPierre and starring Patrick Swayze as Max Lowe, a surgeon from Houston, Texas. After losing a young patient on the operating table Max quits practicing medicine and struggles with his beliefs and anger. He goes to India to find himself. After a night of drinking with a local girl he gets beat up by some of the local underworld figures and is taken to a local free clinic by Hasari Pal (Omu Pori). Here Max meets Sister Joan (Pauline Collins), a nun trying to help the poor people in the City of Joy. Initially resisting Joan's request to help, Max finally gives in and helps build a new clinic which angers the local "Godfather". We follow as Both Max and Hasari overcome hardships to a spiritual awakening.
