Mae Doyle comes back home after having left this small fishermen town ten years before. She's bitter and cynical as her dreams haven't been fulfilled : "big dreams, small results" is the way she describes herself to her brother Joe. She's nonetheless touched by the sincere love of Jerry D'Amato, Joe's blunt boss. So she marries Jerry, gives him a little Gloria and tries her best to make her husband happy.

Jerry's best friend, Earl Pfeiffer, is also a bitter man abandoned by his wife. Relations between May and Earl are always tense as May knows that she could fall for him during one of her moments of depression. One day, Earl spends the night at the couple's home and, after Jerry's departure, tries to seduce May. She resists but finally falls in Earl's arms. A few days later, Mae announces to Jerry that she will leave him.
