At the beginning of the 19th century, civil war reigns in Mexico. President Diaz uses force against his own people to maintain order while bandits, like General Mongo, hope that the revolutionary movements will make them rich. The Swede Yodlaf Peterson, an arms dealer, and El Vasco, a naive Mexican peasant lieutenant, are asked by General Mongo to retrieve Prof. Xantos who's kept in an American prison in El Yuma, Texas.

Prof. Xantos is the leader of a non-violent revolutionary movement whose members are systematically slaughtered by the governmental forces and by Mongo's soldiers but he's the only one who knows the combination that would open the safe containing a special war chest. Peterson and El Vasco will become friends along the way to Texas and manage to set Xantos free. But on their way back to Mexico, they'll have to first confront Jack Palance, Peterson's ex-partner, and his gang who want to give Xanthos back to the American army and Xantho's followers who hope to save him from Mongo's hands.
