A single father and reformed workaholic named Russell Durrell (Vaughn) balances his work as an attorney and a high school basketball coach with the daily pressures and care of his five year old son Calvin (Moat). The two moved to rural Kansas after Russell's wife Kate (Potter) abandoned them in Chicago. Just as Russell begins a new relationship with veterinarian assistant Beth Ward (Lauren Adams), his estranged wife reappears and suddenly now wants to be a part of her husband and son's life again. Russell feels torn between his feeling for the new girlfriend and the love he still carries for his wife. Adding to the stress and confusion in his life is the fact that he is presented with the opportunity to join a major firm in Dallas, something he has always wanted to do but the timing couldn't be worse.
