The movie is firstly about the way a well-known jewish ophtalmologist cope with guilt. Harrassed by Anjelica Huston, his mistress, Martin Landau wants to save his marriage and lets his brother Sam Waterston hires a hit man to get rid of her. Then overwhelmed by guilt, Landau remembers his childhood and the jewish strict code of ethics.

Meanwhile, Allen, a documentaries director, falls in love with Mia Farrow who produces the movie Allen has accepted to direct by special request of his brother-in-law Alan Alda.

One of the best Woody Allen films.
