John Tyree is a staff sergeant in the US army special forces. In 2003, he is lying on the ground in Germany with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. Forward it to 2001, John takes a two week vacation leave and heads to his hometowm of Charleston, South Carolina. He goes to visit his widowed father. While vacationing he meets a girl named Savannah, a college student whose purse happens to fall off the pier. John goes to rescue her purse from the water. Over the course of two weeks, John and Savannah spend time getting to know each other and happen to fall madly in love. He goes to meet her family and neighbor Tim Wheddon and his autistic son Alan. Savannah also goes to meet Johns father a solitary man who happens to be obsessed with his coin collection. Savannah happens to tell John that his father might be mildly autistic. John takes her remarks as offensive and storms out of the house. He ends up punching her neighbor Tim and later apologizes to him and leaves a note for Savannah saying, " see you soon, rather than goodbye." John and Savannah continue their relationship through letters and make plans to build a life together when he leaves the army. The September 9/11 attacks have him reconsider the army and he re-enlists. Their romance continues for the next two years but Savannah isn't able to wait around for John to come back and wants to move on with her life.

Best part of story, including ending:
What I like about the movie is how it moves you and you are able to feel what the characters are going through. The chemistry between the two made you feel how in love they were.
Best scene in story:
My favorite scene would be when John helped rescue Savannah's purse from the water.
Opinion about the main character:
What I like about the main character is how devoted he is to Savannah, you can sense his loyalty and love for her. He keeps you engaged in the movie wanting to know what will happen at the end.
