This was the first in the series of films featuring Charles Bronson in the role of the self assumed city paladin,Paul Kersey . This movie shows his transformation from a peaceful city architect to a man who habitually hunts down criminals by the night. When he comes home one day, to see his wife killed and his daughter raped and maimed, Kersey is shattered and is sent for a vacation by his boss. There, incidentally, he gets to hold a gun for the first time - an instrument he would use to telling effect once he got back to New York. Although the citizens think he is doing the city a favour, the police are hot on his heels.
