The two men in the first canoe stop to rest and wander into the woods. Two mountain men catch them and rape one of the men. Before they're able to rape the other one, one of the other business men shoots one of the mountain men with a bow and arrow. The other mountain man escapes.
Instead of calling the cops, the business men bury the body.
As they continue their trip, they discover the other mountain man following them, waiting for an opportunity to kill them. While trying to get away, they hit some rapids, both canoes tip over and one of them breaks. One of the men drowns and another breaks his leg badly.
One of the business climbs a cliff and waits for the mountain man to show up. When he does, the business man kills him.
The three remaining business men salvage the remaining canoe and finally make it back to town.
Not wanting to get in any trouble for killing the mountain men, they conveniently leave that part out their story to the police about how their canoes capsized, causing one man to be injured and one man to die.

Four ordinary business men take an ill fated trip down a mountain river. Two of them run into mountain men who tie one to a tree and rape the other. The leader of the group is then forced to kill the rapist and they are left with the decision of what to do with the body.

Four businessmen take a canoeing trip down a wild backwoods Georgia river that will soon disappear behind a dam. They are of varied levels of toughness and ability, from macho Reynolds down to soft and chunky Ned Beatty, with Voight somewhere in between. Ronny Cox faces off on guitar with a mongoloid banjo player for the hit theme tune, "Dueling Banjos." Facing the river and threatening hill people, the men are tested to their limits ... and beyond. Based on the novel by poet James Dickey and directed by John Boorman, this 1972 film was a shocker for its time.
