Young Doyamoyee(Sharmila Tagore) is married to Umaprasad(Soumitra Chatterjee), the younger son of an opulent family in Chandipur headed by the aging landlord, Kalikinkar Roy (Chhabi Biswas). In the family also are Umaprasad's elder brother, his wife and their little son Khoka ,for whom Doyamoyee has a special affection.

Things start changing the day her father-in-law has a dream which leads him to believe that Doyamoyee is a reincarnation of the Hindu Goddess Kali. He insists that she be henceforth worshipped as a Goddess. In a bizarre coincidence, a mortally sick child is placed at her feet and gets miraculously cured. Thousands of people flock to worship Doyamoyee in the belief that she has supernatural and healing powers. Meanwhile, her husband, who stays away in Calcutta for his studies come back to aid her but by then things have spun out of control. The worst happens when Khoka falls seriosly ill. Kalikinkar refuses to get medical assistance and instead relies on what he thinks are the supernatural powers of Doyamoyee.
