After recovering from a heart attack Eddie Miller (Robert Forster) tries to get back on the road as a diamond salesmen but his boss intially refuses due to insurance problems. He eventually convices him but his boss insists that he trains and mentors a cocky young kid Bobby Walker (Donnie Wahlberg) and that if it goes well he might be able to do something for him about getting a permanent job.

They hit the road together and both have a hard time getting accustomed to each other's personality while hitting jewelry stories in the small towns in Pennsyvania. But Bobby eventually sees the error of his ways and smartens up and wants to learn from the wiser, savvy Eddie. The younger Bobby starts to care so much for the seemingly lonely Eddie that he wants to get him laid in a whore house in Altoona that old friend Tina (Jasmine Guy) runs.

It doesn't work out but Bobby asks Tina to try again and the second time she finds Katie, a more mature women for Eddie. They date and start to fall for each other. While driving through Bobby wants to stop by the whorehouse before they reach the next town where Katie is and they get robbed and one million dollars in diamonds gets taken. Eddie loses his job and Bobby loses touch with Eddie for over a year until he goes to see Tina who tells him that Katie is in Mexico and that's when Bobby finds out the whole story behind the robbery.
