TV child star of the '70s, Dickie Roberts is now 35 and parking cars. Craving to regain the spotlight, he auditions for a role of a normal guy, but the director quickly sees he is anything but normal. Dickie hires a family to help him replay his childhood. Several people who are also involved in Dickie's special world include: Sidney, Dickie's longtime friend and agent; George, Dickie's adopted father and Grace his adopted mother. Also the two children Sally And Sam {Grace and George's children}. Cyndi, Dicky's old girlfriend stops by dickys step mom and dads house to try to get back with Dicky because she think he is now going to become a big star. Dicky tells Cyndi to go home and George devorces Grace and marries Cyndi. Dicky Gets the roll for the movies and leaves Grace, Sam and Sally. When he is filming the movie he realizes that Grace, Sam and Sally where the only people that really cared.

Dickie Roberts is a former child star. But is desperate to revive his acting career, Dickie goes to audition for a movie role in a Rob Reiner movie, called "Blakes Backyard".But the director does not believe that Dickie is normal enough to play this role.
Very determined to get the role Dickie hires a "typical" family to get the feel of a real life upbringing which he never had. But when Dickie moves in the family becomes anything but normal.
Dickie learns about growing up from helping a young girl become a dancer, to just help getting a teenager a date with the neighbor. As Dickie unleashes his wild inner child and learns in the process some unforgettable lessons about fame, fortune and true family values.
