Digging to China Movie Review Summary

Actors: Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Bacon, Mary Stuart Masterson

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Digging to China

This movie stars Evan Rachel Wood as Harriet, a precocious and imaginative ten year old (especially funny is her trying to dig to China and wait for aliens to land in her school yard). She lives with her alcoholic mother (Cathy Moriarty) and her big sister Gwen (Mary Stuart Masterson) in the countryside. The family runs the Indian Village Cabins (a motel). While sitting by the road a car peters out in front of her. In the car is Ricky (Kevin Bacon) a retarded man. Harriet befriends Ricky and she finds out that his mother is dying of cancer so she brings Ricky to a home. One day at school Gwen comes to tell Harriet that their mother has died in a car accident. Harriet becomes upset and really bonds with Ricky. As she is grieving Harriet then comes to learn that her big sister is really her biological mother and that she won't have to worry about being an orphan but that she must not stay with Ricky anymore. We follow all the conflicts of Ricky with his dying mother, Gwen's misunderstanding of Harriet and Ricky's close friendship, and Harriet accepting Gwen as her mother.
