District 9 takes place in an alternate 1982 South Africa. The film tells the tale of a Bureaucrat--Wikus Van De Merwe-- contracted by the South African government and his father-in-law, to assist in the forced relocation of Alien visitors living just outside of Johannesburg. Unfortunately during the removal of one of the alien tenants Wikus is sprayed with an unknown substance. During the course of the film we are shown both metaphorically and literally how Wikus changes and becomes the very thing he thought he was above.

Best part of story, including ending:
It was a different twist on the whole apartheid narrative and slips in some social commentary along with a decent amount of sci-fi and action to keep the film entertaining.
Best scene in story:
When we first learn that about the aliens and are introduced to them, the effects are unbelievable in how realistic they are, and the creatures though very bug-like had some very human qualities about them.
Opinion about the main character:
He's a bit of a jerk initially, but as the film progresses he begins to change in more ways than one.
