Soon after his appointment as assistant to Dr Gillespie (Lionel Barrymore) at Blair General Hospital, Dr James Kildare (Lew Ayres), is called back to his small hometown to aid his father, Dr Stephen Kildare (Samuel S. Hinds), who is close to collapse from overwork. The townsfolk resent the young doctor's new approach to medical procedures. Sensing trouble, his mentor, Dr Gillespie, offers in-person support.
