It is November 1963 in San Francisco. Eddie Birdlace (Phoenix), one of a quartet who call themselves the Four B's and are about to ship out as Marines to Okinawa and then Vietnam the following day, have one last party and competition. In a "dogfight," everyone bets as to who can find and bring in the ugliest girl as his date. Eddie locates a homely waitress named Rose (Taylor), and though he has second thoughts about putting her through the ordeal, he turns drunk and surly instead. Outraged, she lets him know what she thinks of the event and the guys, and Eddie ends up ditching his buddies in order to make it up to her. This 1991 film is sweet, lovely, and moving -- though very foul-mouthed -- and avoids all the obvious pitfalls and cliches. Watch for young Brendan Fraser in his feature film debut as a sailor in a bar brawl.
