Sawako attempts to commit suicide when her fiancee, Matsumoto, leaves her to marry the boss's daughter. When he finds out that his love almost lost her life he abandons the marriage and returns to her. But she is like a vegetable now, she doesn't understand anything, and she doesn't recognises him. So he gives up his life and begins wandering around, tied with her with a long red rope, like the dolls are attached to their puppet master's hands. Their story is interwoven with Hiro's, who left his girlfriend, and with Nukui's whose love for a singer will lead him to blind himself.
