A group of thieves steal a rare gem. Two of the group double cross the leader Patrick Koster (Sean Bean) and take off with the stone. Ten years later Prominent psychiatrrist Nathan Conrad (Douglas) is asked to examina a disturbed patient named Elisabeth Burrows (Brittany Murphy). Patrick Kidnaps Nathan's Daughter, forcing him to try and extract a secret number from Elisabeth which will lead Patrick to the location of the precious gems.

Dr. Nathan Conrad (Michael Douglas) is a highly trained and highly paid psychiatrist. His patients usually consist of those wealthy enough to afford his fees, but he cannot turn down his friend's request for help. A group of thieves rob a valuable jewel from a bank. One of the thieves becomes a traitor and steals the jewel. He dies but his daughter Elizabeth ends up with it.
Cut to the present. A psychiatrist, Nathan Conrad (Douglas), wakes up and finds that his daughter has been kidnapped. He gets a mysterious phone call from the kidnapper, who happens to be the lead bank robber Patrick (Bean), that tells him that he has to make a woman named Elizabeth (Murphy), the traitor's daughter, snap out of her catatonic state. Elizabeth knows where the jewel is and they will kill Nathan's daughter if they don't get it back in time.
