Monty Capuletti (Rodney Dangerfield) is a baby photographer who lives with his family in Staten Island. Monty relishes the good things in life, such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, gambling, taking drugs and gorging on fatty foods. Fun-loving Monty does everything in excess with his best plumber pal, Nicky Cerone (Joe Pesci), always beside him. The Capuletti Family is preparing for oldest daughter Allison's (Jennifer Jason Leigh) wedding to Julio (Taylor Negron), a Hispanic gang member. Monty is not too pleased about the upcoming nuptials, even though his wife Rose (Candy Azzara) tells him, “It's a good boy's gang. They help people.” Arriving in town for the big event is Rose's wealthy and crotchety mother, Mrs. Monahan (Geraldine Fitzgerald) and her arrogant and prissy assistant Clive Barlow (Jeffrey Jones). Mrs. Monahan openly disapproves of slovenly Monty and her harsh criticisms send him flying out the front door in a rage. Monty spends the night drinking and gambling with Nicky. Their foolish antics cause the demise of Allison's decadent wedding cake, wedged between toilets in the back of Nicky's van.

After the wedding, Allison and Julio leave for their honeymoon, with Julio quite anxious to consummate their marriage. Allison, an extremely nervous virgin, is quickly disgusted when Julio produces a graphically illustrated instruction manual. When a drunken Monty calls their hotel room to say goodnight to his “little baby“, a hot and bothered Julio hangs up on him., further enraging Allison. She promptly leaves Julio, forcing the frustrated and devastated young man to concoct a series of harebrained schemes in order to win her back.
Shortly after the honeymoon fiasco, Monty and Rose receive the sad news that Mrs. Monahan has died in a plane crash. When her lawyer Scrappleton (Tom Ewell) reads Mrs. Monahan's will, the Capuletti clan learns that they will inherit ten million dollars … but only if Monty changes his unhealthy ways. If Monty has eliminated his bad habits within one year, they will receive the money. If Monty fails, the riches will go to Clive, who will stop at nothing to guarantee that Monty does not succeed. Nicky tells Monty that the challenge is nothing: “It's easy money!” However, Monty begins to have doubts when Nicky turns out to be anything but understanding and supportive.
