Michael Caine stars as literary professor Frank Bryant in the drama/comedy written by Willy Russell. Rita (Julie Walters) is a twenty-six year old, uneducated Liverpool hairdresser with a midlife crisis. She enrolls at Open University to get an education in literature. Her tutor is the disillusioned and constantly drunk Frank. He initially doesn't want to teach Rita aka Susan, but he admires her spunky originality and takes her on as a student. However, Rita is having a hard time adjusting with her working class family. Her father and husband want her to have a baby and the husband even goes so far as to burn her books because he finds her birth control pills. Rita isn't ready for a baby, she just wants to find herself. Meanwhile, Frank is hitting the bottle hard and making a fool of himself in class. He is daydreaming while student discuss William Blake. Jaded and tired, Frank gets through his days by drinking. Rita's serahc for herself is tough as she is invitred to a party by Frank. She tries to get her hubby to go with her, but he goes to the pub with her parents. She shows up to the party but while looking through the window, she see's the women in pretty dressed and feels like she will be fodder for laughter. She doesn't quite shake her working class shell until she drops the husband and goes to France where she learns all about Blake. Frank is impressed but still having trouble with the bottle. Ultimately, Rita passes her exams and Frank is sent to Australia for his misconduct. They both grew and learn from each other.
