Based on a play by Noel Langley and Robert Morley, Edward, My Son stars Spencer Tracy as Arnold Boult, an unscrupulous businessman, husband, and father. The movie opens up with an aged Arnold Boult telling you about his son Edward. It then flashes back to 1919, the birth of Edward, showing Arnold walking gome proud with his infant son. But things wouldn't be good for long. Arnold and his wife Evelyn (Deborah Kerr) find out that Edward has nerve damage in his hip and that only one doctor in Switzerland would dare and try such an operation to fix it. Arnold needs one thousand pounds to pay for the operation and he comes up with a scheme to burn down a business he owns to collect the insurance. The Operation is a success and Arnold would go on to spoil his son to no end. The movie quickly jumps through time from 1919 through 1946. Along the way everyone around Arnold become fed up with the way he uses his money and influence to get away with crimes that he sees as doing anything for his son. With the break up of a marriage through infidelity and death of loved ones, Arnold never learns to see the error of his ways.
