Traveling to Buenos Aires with singer Agustín Magaldi (Jimmy Nail, Eva begins her trip up the social ladder, with a man named Che (Antonio Banderas) serving as the film's narrator.

Eventually becoming succesful as an actress, Eva falls in love with Army officer Juan Peron (Jonathan Pryce). Eva helps Juan eventually become the leader of Argentina and she oes on to influence the country as its first lady.

Evita is based on the Broadway musical of the same name. It is the rags to riches story of Eva Marie Duarte Peron. A small time Argentine actress who sleeps her way to top, to become the First Lady of Argentina.

Eva Duarte (Madonna) starts out losing her father and not being able to come to his funeral because she is of the lower-classes. She ends up marrying Juan Peron, a rising leader of Argentina. Through her activism and love of the lower classes, she convinces the public to elect Juan Peron, and thus her struggle for the people and for her own life continues. Based on the life of political and spiritual leader Evita Duarte de Peron of Argentina who was as revolutionary as Princess Diana was to England.
